akoue/formats
Formats
What the app will take, what it will recognise but not take, and where it gets chapters and covers from. The lists come from the import code, not from promises.
01
Audio
Plays as it is, without conversion.
- mp3
- Chapters come from CHAP frames in the tags or from a .cue next to the file
- m4b · m4a · aac · mp4
- Chapters come from the container itself
- flac · alac · wav · aiff · caf
- Lossless; chapters by file or from a .cue
- opus
- In an Ogg container, which the system reads directly
02
Audio that does not play
Import notices such files and names them in the report, but does not put them into a book. The originals stay where they are.
- ogg · oga · wma · ape · wv · mpc
- “Format not supported”: these need conversion, and the app has none. Convert them to m4b or mp3 and add them again
- aax · aaxc
- “Format is protected”: Audible files are encrypted; the app does not open them and will not remove the protection
- mka · amr · ac3 · dts
- Not recognised: they do not get into a book and do not appear in the report
03
Text
A text edition lives beside the narration, in the same card. Eight formats.
- epub
- Built-in reader: pictures, alignment, type styles, chapters from the table of contents. Both as a file and as a package folder from a Mac
- fb2
- Built-in reader: chapters by section, verse and subheadings within the text; plain text, no pictures
- md
- Built-in reader: chapters by # headings, markup stripped
- Built-in page reader: the file’s own table of contents, the place is remembered; the page count is known from the first opening
- txt
- The iOS system viewer; the reading place is not remembered
- rtf · doc · docx
- The iOS system viewer; no pages and no progress
- readme.txt, info.txt
- A release description, not a book: such files never become a book
04
Archives
ZIP only — but with Cyrillic names inside.
- zip
- Stored or deflate-compressed, over 4 GB too. Unpacked alongside into a folder with its name, then deleted
- names inside
- UTF-8 or the best fit among the old encodings: CP866, CP1251, KOI8-R and the Latin ones
- rar · 7z
- Not opened; nested archives are not unpacked
05
Chapters
Where a book’s structure comes from.
- several files
- A chapter is a file, in natural name order: 2 before 10
- one mp3
- CHAP frames in the tags if there are any, otherwise a .cue next to it
- one m4b, m4a, mp4
- The container’s own chapters
- no titles
- A chapter with no title, or with a number instead of one, is shown as “Chapter N”
- by hand
- Chapters are renamed, moved, split and deleted — in the book’s make-up
06
Covers
From your files only: the app never goes online for them.
- in the book’s folder
- jpg, png, heic, webp, gif: first cover, folder, front, album or “обложка”, otherwise the largest one
- in the file
- The mp3, m4b or flac tag; the EPUB and FB2 cover; the first page of a PDF
- nowhere
- The app draws its own: the title and the author on a coloured background
07
Limits
There is no limit on a book’s size or on the number of files — only the space on the device.
- folder depth
- Six levels of nesting; anything deeper is “Could not read”
- space
- Import always leaves at least 200 MB free on the device
- iCloud Drive
- Import downloads files that are not on the device yet by itself; a book is only ever created in full
- cover
- A picture over 20 MB does not count as a cover
